Sailing Starts Here.

Details: What is a Sea Ship?

  • Co-ed Program. Teens combine Scouting America values with serious nautical skills, led by the youth elected leadership.

  • Ages. For youth who are 13+ and have completed the 8th grade, up to their 21st birthday.

  • Year-Round Activities. Ship 799 meets year-round. When we are not sailing, the youth choose activities like learning to scuba dive, climbing gyms, snow sports, service projects, and social events. The Ship meets twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays with one monthly activity during most of the year. During the summer months we offer sailing opportunities during the weekdays and weekends with Southern Idaho Sailing Association (SISA) regatta events.

  • No Experience Needed. Whether you're new to sailing or have some experience but wanting more opportunities, you are welcome to check us out. Adult leaders provide guidance as Scouts learn. Adults are welcome to join after completing an application.

  • Connect & Explore. Scouts (Troop or Crew members) can be involved in multiple units—like your current unit and the Sea Scout Ship! Double your adventure and connect with other youth who are equally captivated by sailing.

Master the Wind: Your Ship's Fleet

Get ready to go beyond the basics. Your Ship's current fleet gives you immediate hands-on experience with three distinct types of sailboats:

Ship 799 Fleet

  • Flying Scot. A high-performance dinghy known for its stability and speed. It's an excellent platform for learning to sail with a jib (two sails) and will help you master the fundamentals of sail trim and boat handling.
  • 22' Catalina. A popular keelboat that offers stability, comfort, and more space. Sailing this boat teaches you teamwork, navigation, and the skills needed for longer cruising - perfect preparation for a leadership role on a larger vessel. Sea Scouts often sleep on this boat during camp outs.
  • Capri Cyclone. A fun, fast planing dinghy designed to skim across the top of the water in a good breeze with one or two crew. The Cyclone is excellent for learning basic racing skills and single-handed sailing.

Why #799?

Did you know that the most recent commissioned USS submarines is the USS Idaho, SSN 799? She was christened in March of 2024 and commissioned into the Navy fleet during the spring of 2025. She follows four previous ships named USS Idaho, proudly representing our home state. In recognition of this great new leading-edge nuclear-powered submarine, our committee respectfully chose #799.

More information on the USS Idaho can be found at: https://ussidahocommittee.org/.
