2024 Fall Snake River District Camp-O-Ree

What is The Defense of Mafeking?? (Scroll down to the red button and register roday!)

You’ll have to do your own research to get the full jitz of it, but here's a little history on it. The siege of Mafeking was a 217-day siege battle for the town of Mafeking (now called Mahikeng) in South Africa during the Second Boer War from October 1899 to May 1900. That’s it, now go do your own research.

The Fall 2024 Camp-O-Ree is loosely based upon the defense of this small South African town and the person who is famous for its defense. Don’t know who that person is? (please do some research, you will be surprised).

An adult leader with the Patrol will act as a safety guide. The Patrol is responsible to navigate to and try to accomplish each station based on the knowledge and training they have received in their Troop Scout program.

Each Patrol is to do their best as a unit with adult guidance or instruction. This is not a competition against other Troops or Patrols, it is an assessment of how well the Adult Leaders of the Troop or Crew are developing their youth to survive in the outdoors.

If the Patrol or Crew fails to complete an event, the question to ask is: Did they learn anything and if so, what did they learn? In this environment, there is no ‘failure’, only an opportunity to learn. Sound good? You’re doggone right.

Land navigation will be emphasized at the Defense of Mafeking Camp-O-Ree. Unit should practice how to use a map and compass. Scouts will be maneuvering from station to station, the distances will be greater than the Klondike so make sure your oreinteering skills are sharp.

Every Scout will want to participate in this year’s Defense of Mafeking Camp-O-Ree. Please review the Leaders Guide and talk it up with your Troop or Crew to get the patrols working tegether!

This is shapping up to be the BIGGEST and BOLDEST fall season outdoorr camping activity happening in the Snake River District. The location is Diamond Field Jack’s, the same place we do the Klondike Derby and coming tot this event will allow scouts to see the area without 4 – 6 feet of snow.

We are keeping costs down to help everyone who wants to attend the opportunity to do so.

Registration is $5.00 per youth and adult.
