Course Description

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is a hands-on, overnight training program for Scouting America leaders. It equips Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters with the practical, fundamental outdoor skills required to confidently lead youth, teach basic rank advancement, and run an effective, youth-led troop.

What to Expect

The training uses the Patrol Method, meaning participants are divided into small groups to experience scouting exactly the way the youth do.

• Format: Typically, an intensive weekend course featuring indoor/outdoor instruction and at least one overnight camping experience.
• Skill Building: Covers practical outdoor requirements ranging from the Scout rank up through First Class.
• Hands-On Practice: You will actively practice what you learn, including setting up tents, outdoor cooking, and meal preparation as a patrol.

Core Topics Covered

The curriculum directly correlates to the Scouts BSA Handbook, focusing on teaching leaders how to instruct scouts safely and effectively.

• Scoutcraft & Woods Tools: Proper use, care, and safety of a knife, bow saw, and hand axe, as well as essential knots and lashings.
• Navigation & Hiking: Map reading, compass use, and trail safety.
• Campfire Planning & Leadership: How to plan and execute a safe, scout-appropriate campfire program (skits, songs), and how to conduct an interfaith worship service.
• Ethics: Leave No Trace principles and outdoor ethics.

Who Should Attend

• Required: All registered Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are required to take IOLS to be considered "position-trained".
• Recommended: Troop Committee members, parents, and Venturing Advisors who participate in outdoor programs.

Note: You must have completed Safeguarding Youth Training before participating.
